Ican Playground: Phnom Penh, Cambodia


The idea from the client was simple we want to create a natural landscape that allows chidlren to create opportunites for play rather than prescribing play using plastic play equipment. We spent a day with the students asking what they wanted and then we began to draw up a plan which could materialize into a varied natural landscape. We used a variety of surface materials both soft and hard we designed in grass banks, fallen logs, stepping stones, rope swings, a bamboo climbing frame, climbing wall, rasied decks, tepee snug, bamboo maze, water falls, slides, curving seats and planters.

To tie the spaces together we used the same formal idea of a river bed that sculpted the islands and borders around the building...
